In university especially when we are student English
department, studying about literature is very important, because that is
studying about language. Literature represents a language and introduces to us
about new word of our experience in writing or scientific works. It is usually
organize as prose, drama, poem, stories and everything about factual and
creative imaginative literature. "Writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas
of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features,
as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays." ( Dictionary.com). Henry
Van Dyke also said that literature consist of those writing which interpret the
meaning of nature of life, in words of charm and power, touched with the
personality of the author, in artistic forms of permanent interest. It means
that with literature we can express our personality barely because it can
educate our life. Through literature, we learn the innermost feeling and
thoughts of people the truest and most real part of themselves.
In literature, consist of two type there are texts
based on factual informative and fiction. Usually in fiction the author only
make opus based on their thinking and factual informative comprises the
interesting facts with analysis and illustrations. The kinds of fiction literature
there are drama, prose literature, myth, short story, novel and poetry. But in
drama has three sub types that are tragedy, comedy and melodrama. Beside that
in factual informative literature or non-fiction literature also has six kinds,
there are autobiography and biography, essay, literary criticism, travel
literature, diary, and also journal. From that, we know that literature consist
of assortedly masterpiece write, even every day we have got wise to literature.
Literature is something that very valuable and so invaluable of its price, we
deservedly have to appreciate through various means. Literature can like a
fancy to because can make an impression on separate which generate empathy to
devotee. There are various means to appreciate the literature some other things
is conducting of interpretation pursuant to nature of masterpiece, analyzing
intrinsic and extrinsic elements of literature, we also must enjoy pursuant to
understanding to get statement and we can giving appreciation to the literary
pursuant to storey based on level quality. When we are read literature, surely
we will not comprehend its contents in once read. Therefore we have to know how
to comprehend a literature as according to what writer intend in its article.
To comprehend the literature the first matter that we do is when we start
reading something, become the language of the time; don’t approach the language
with a modern expectation. Then break it down, don’t skim and take it in.
Absorb the language like a wet sponge, read a chapter then put the book down
and try to take in what you have read. Talk to people about you are reading, if
you really don’t understand something it can be a good idea to physically ask
for help even if its only for second opinion. And the last is don’t struggle
with the text alone, watch a film, read a critics opinion, do anything to help
you with the reading of a text, it is important to be open to different
interpretations as well.
In
learning literature is very importance to study the approach of literary. The
first is the background, we must know
the background of the literature to understand when and where that article was
made. Then we must know the author because each every writer have different
stylistic in each its masterpiece. The readers also have important role, cause
their as personate devotee of belles-lettres as well as criticize in every
masterpiece. Also from other literature to comparing with other literature to
look for difference and equation and also advantages and disadvantages. Talking
about advantages of study about literature, there is many kindliness among
others is literature provides pleasure to listeners and readers, it is a relaxing escape from daily
problems, and it fills leisure moments. Literature
builds experience. Children expand their horizons through
vicarious experiences, they learn about the past as well as the present and
learn about a variety of cultures, including their own. Literature provides a language model for those who hear and read it.
Literature develops thinking skills. Multicultural literature helps readers
value people from different races, ethnic groups, and cultures. Literature improves reading ability and
attitudes. So, by studying literature will to increase our knowledge assorted
of existing belles-lettres this world.
